Athletic Stigma of Sport Psychological Assistance
Rookies need Sport Psychology Professionals
Rookie players have an enormous transition when arriving at the professional level. There are new venues, new found fame, large contracts, and social dynamics that can be cumbersome and overwhelming. Why is it so difficult to overcome?
Let me start by saying… no one is prepared to enter the arena of pro-ball without a mental fumble so to speak. All athletes handle the stress in different ways. But, what if they cannot compartmentalize the stress and the new teammates, money, and organizational pressure? Where do they turn? Are they weak if they seek the assistance of a sport psychology consultant?
The answer is NO! Sport Psychology consultants are trained to assist athletes at all levels to maintain harmony and order within their mind and bodies. Certain consultants can offer mental tools that will enable an athlete to transition better and elevate their game early on as a rookie. I personally believe each professional sports team should have a few consultants on hand to assist rookie with the transition from collegiate to professional sports. Compartmentalizing the new fame and pressure can be exhausting and scary, and hurt an athlete’s performance.
I have trained athletes mentally and physically for over 20 years now and believe the best way to elevate ones’ game is to increase mind strength and utilize mental tools that would not have been taught otherwise as part of practice on the court or on the field. I encourage all athletes to learn and understand what sport psychology can bring to the table.
There has been a negative stigma to the use of such a sports professional and that should not be the case. It is a strong athlete who pursues the extra assistance and realizes it is better to be proactive than reactive.
